Corporate sustainability

Shared-use services

U-Haul is in the sharing business. This company was founded on the fundamental philosophy that “the division of use and specialization of ownership” are good for both our customers and the environment. Our shared-use strategy has continually helped us focus on caring for our customers instead of simply providing products. Our sustainability practice is to increase the shared use of our resources and promote sustainable local communities by helping more families move with U-Haul products and services.

Sustainable production and consumption calls for a systematic solution moving from a product-based economy to a function-based economy involving greater use of services. A main approach of sustainable services is shared-use services, which aim to increase utilization of the material parts of a system by sharing the products required.

Our goal is to manufacture/buy fewer trucks and trailers, thus reducing the need for energy and raw materials like steel and other limited resources, and to help more families move with the rental equipment we already have.
